There is nothing conventional about imaginary worlds. From the bridge of a spaceship to the pits of a dungeon, in all heroic tales the rules for what gets called “the backdrop” are the same:
“Portray the action behind the action at the center of attention as importantly as the protagonist pursues his adventure. No less.”
It’s a trade more like sculpture than craftsmanship, and though craftsmanship and quality are just as important, set design is where the sky truly is the limit.
